shabbat, i lit maches
nothing much of interest happened this shabat.
not this shabat, but exactly two years ago.
i read the parsha (ki tetze)
and all of a sudden I knew I was going to explode with rage and anger
the rage of a person silenced, objectified and humiliated
if you don't know what I'm talking about, read it again, and pretend you are one of the women facing that legislation in that parsha.
I picked up a box of matches.
I lit one, two, three.
I put them out in the sink.
TAKE THAT, GOD.
TAKE THAT, JEWS.
TAKE THAT, MEN.
shabat?
who needs it? GET IT OUT OF MY FACE. Get torah, religion, judaism OUT OF MY FACE.
(Can you imagine, that one time they asked me to read this parsha at an orthox feminist women's torah reading? How insane can that be????)
That was two years ago.
Since than I have learned,
that I don't keep shabat because of any fake torah.
I keep it to honor gods creation.
I keep it to celebrate god given freedom.
and no stupid torah, or human being that follows it, can take that away from me.
