A 19-year-old Lakewood man has been identified as the suspect sought by authorities in an armed robbery at Reich Jewelers, where two employees were held at gunpoint and forced to fill duffel bags with jewelry.

Law enforcement agencies are searching for fugitive Avraham Rotenberg, 19, of Birch Street, Lakewood, in connection with the Feb. 17 robbery.

Rotenberg is wanted on charges of first-degree armed robbery, theft and possession of a weapon — a shotgun — for an unlawful purpose, according to the arrest warrant, Howell police Detective Eileen Dodd said.

Some of the jewelry was recovered after a Lakewood rabbi received a mysterious call at about 4:30 a.m. March 6 telling him to look outside his door for packages, police said. The rabbi called Lakewood police and reported the call.

Lakewood police responded and found two bags of jewelry outside the home of Rabbi Michael Rottenberg on Heathwood Avenue. The bags contained some of the proceeds from the Reich Jewelry store robbery.

Dodd said Reich Jewelers was robbed about 11:35 a.m. Feb. 17 by Rotenberg, who then fled the store with bags of jewelry.

During the robbery, Rotenberg kept the shotgun trained on the employees while demanding that they fill two duffel bags with jewelry from the display cases and the safe.

There were two employees and two customers in the store at the time of the robbery, which is located in the Grebow Shopping Center on Route 9, Dodd said. The robber fled in a 2004 Acura TSX with New York tags, and was found abandoned by Lakewood police off Miller Road in Lakewood the day after the robbery.

first of all i was at the jewish musium thursday night and saw the fashion show. I was expecting a regular fashion show but i was dismayed to see the line of which Levi had taken. He says he gets his inspiration from when he was a child (Yiddishkeit) all his designes have to do with jewish themes.
If he would not have the jewish themes he would have zero talent he would not be able to come up with any original ideas. I dont think he will make it as a fashion desigher because no one would buy the stuff that he makes. Not one buyer from the stores was their, unfortunatly most of the people at this show were quote on quote frum or lost souls off the derech. I was crying for klal Yisroel with some of the things that i saw. I left pretty early most of these people went on to the so called chulent party so you can just imagine who these people are.
We have to be mechasek these lost souls so that they should come back and relize what beauty lies in our lives instead of the emptyness that they live in.

Sex under the Burqas in Bet Shemesh

March 30, 2008 By: shmutzi Category: Uncategorized 28 Comments →

from iprayeveryday

The above is footage of Rebbetzin [Rabbanit] Bruriah Keren, resident of Ramat Bet Shemesh Bet, recently arrested and accused of physically (and perhaps sexually) abusing her children, of which she has 12. How many of the 12 that were abused is not so clear. Her children range in age from 8 - 33. Most were not living at home.

This comes straight after another couple, immigrants (olim) from the US, were arrested for similar accusations.

This news is hitting Israel hard; this Rabanit has been blogged about quite a bit recently and has been dubbed names such as the 'Burqa babe' and the like. Reason for this is the way she chooses to garb herself– if you thought the Palestinian women were strict, forget it– in her 'hyper-tznius', she wears multiple layers of clothing, keeps her hands face completely covered, and will not even speak if there is a man present. Women in the RBS Bet community who look up to her and follow her ways hold her in very high regard.

In court, she would not speak, and had only her eyes visible to the judge after he refused to allow the court to be in session unless she revealed herself.

Among the charges for abuse are tying up her children for multiple hours at a time as 'punishment', forcing them to urinate and defecate on themselves; hitting them with belts and electric cables; and other signs of abuse.

Recently it has been reported that her children were as well involved in acts of incest. A 24-year old son was also taken into custody for committing incest with one or more of his siblings.

A list of articles and links can be found here at the Awareness Center.

And all this in the name of tznius…

I dont care how frum you want to think you are. Makes me sick.

She sheltered her kids from reality, making them want it more. They found it and acted up; she hit them. They were probably told all these terrible things about sex and attraction, which only led to them finding out about it amongst each other.

I wonder if the children of this psycho will ever heal? And what was her husband doing?? Running around in the US raising money for his 'needy' family…

Home After Three Months Away

March 29, 2008 By: 7fatcow Category: Madness, Poetry 3 Comments →

Gone now the baby's nurse,
a lioness who ruled the roost
and made the Mother cry.
She used to tie
gobbets of porkrind to bowknots of gauze—
three months they hung like soggy toast
on our eight foot magnolia tree,
and helped the English sparrows
weather a Boston winter.

Three months, three months!
Is Richard now himself again?
Dimpled with exaltation,
my daughter holds her levee in the tub.
Our noses rub,
each of us pats a stringy lock of hair—
they tell me nothing's gone.
Though I am forty-one,
not fourty now, the time I put away
was child's play. After thirteen weeks
my child still dabs her cheeks
to start me shaving. When
we dress her in her sky-blue corduroy,
she changes to a boy,
and floats my shaving brush
and washcloth in the flush…
Dearest I cannot loiter here
in lather like a polar bear.

Recuperating, I neither spin nor toil.
Three stories down below,
a choreman tends our coffin length of soil,
and seven horizontal tulips blow.
Just twelve months ago,
these flowers were pedigreed
imported Dutchmen, now no one need
distunguish them from weed.
Bushed by the late spring snow,
they cannot meet
another year's snowballing enervation.

I keep no rank nor station.
Cured, I am frizzled, stale and small."

A letter to Simon Jacobson from an angry Baal Tshuva

March 29, 2008 By: hsd Category: Good vs. Evil, Madness, Uncategorized, comparative religion 48 Comments →

Dear Rabbi Jacobson,

You are perhaps the only Rabbi that I feel I can write to about the following painful subject.

I grew up in a very secular home, with no faith and no G-d. My parents were both highly intelligent, cultured individuals. My father amassed a fortune as a shrewd and successful businessman, while my mother was a professional in her own right. But despite my family’s stature, we grew up in a loveless home. Our parents were not there for us, nor were they there for each other. My parents were not loyal to each other and ultimately divorced, leaving my siblings and me adrift.

I was always conscious of being Jewish, though I knew nothing about it. As I suffered through my un-nurturing home life, I began a spiritual search that ultimately led me to the Jewish community. There I found a warmth and love that I had never before experienced. The power of Jewish tradition – Shabbat, prayer, even kosher – resonated with me. Not that commitment came easily to me. But I appreciated the power of commitment – something I had never really experienced. My life was all about shifting loyalties, broken promises, dashed dreams – all creating profound distrust and insecurity. But now I discovered something new: Committed people to each other, to family, to community and to a higher calling. It was quite compelling. I also sensed a simplicity and even rejection of the high culture I grew up in. Most of the religious Jews I met were not open to other ideas and to a free-spirited perspective. But I reckoned that perhaps the trade-off was worth it: Sacrificing some of the beauty of art and literature, but without a rudder, for a life of trust, love and commitment, with very strong sense of purpose.

I was seduced by the observant lifestyle,…. (more…)
