shouldn't the holocaust have engendered a new form of judaism? shouldn't've a mad messiah risen up? kahane is the closest thing but "never again" has no positive vision. it should've been the greatest reshaping since post-exile rabbinic judaism. instead, nothing. what a lack of imagination. maybe it's not too late? i think it is. someone had to strike when the furnace was hot. we had our opportunity and now judaism is dead. hitler won, and to think, that he probably died thinking he failed.

WTF? Hello, Ben Gurion? That’s a pretty successful messianic charachter, inventing new holidays and dissolving the rule of Halacha in judaism. Pretty messianic, if Moshiach is us being as bad/good as der Haillige Germans. The end without end.

I think your conceit is that Sabbateanism grew out of disaster, not out of bounty, and I don’t think that’s nessesarily so. Why does orthodox judaism thrive, for the same reason “chassidut” first did: because of community wealth and comfort, because of successful buisnessman combined with the precedented poverty and sense of potential worldly disaster from failure to impress the Master of the World. or something.
But basically, new wealth/security/satisfaction brings messianic innovation, fear of death breeds conservatism.
