uh, maybe that would be too sick to have someone preying on jews directly after such a tragedy.

a messianic "figure" sounds twisted.
either someone gets it right or they nasty.

Shlomo criminalized hate and anger in the Jewish messiah. the arizal too? How old is the specific tradition of moshiach being without bad feelings?

WTF? Hello, Ben Gurion? That's a pretty successful messianic charachter, inventing new holidays and dissolving the rule of Halacha in judaism. Pretty messianic, if Moshiach is us being as bad/good as der Haillige Germans. The end without end.

And if not Ben Gurion, then Shlomo? That might have been kinda different.

I think your conceit is that Sabbateanism grew out of disaster, not out of bounty, and I don't think that's nessesarily so. Why does orthodox judaism thrive, for the same reason "chassidut" first did: because of community wealth and comfort, because of successful buisnessman combined with the precedented poverty and sense of potential worldly disaster from failure to impress the Master of the World. or something.

But basically, new wealth/security/satisfaction brings messianic innovation, fear of death breeds conservatism.
