In honor of the upcoming Sabbatian holidays of "Festival of Luminaries" ("Chag haMe'orot") Tamuz 23 (this year, Saturday, July 26), and "Holy Sabbath" ("Shabat Kodesh") Tamuz 24 (this year, Sunday, July 27 - as known, in additoin to the weekly Sabbath, there was a separate Sabbatian Sabbath, which is only once a year, and can fall out on any day of the week), and in preperation of the upcoming month, herewith is enclosed, in addition to Amirah's natal chart above, a letter to his followers that he wrote in 1671 for the upcoming 9th of Av. As is known, that year (5431) was the most climactic and energized year of the post-conversion years. It is so renowned in the Sabbatian legend, that various sabbatian writers of the time (e.g. Chazan, Y.L. Tovah, both in his commentary and his hymns) refer to it as "The Year of (our) Redemption" or "The Year of the Turbun" (for that year, many converted, even before the sultan), and as is attested in the fascinating chronicles of Jacob Najara, Rabbi of Gaza and grandson of Israel Najara the poet, covering the months of Shevat to Av, with some text missing in middle (from the ms. "Sefer Yemot Mashiach," originally printed by Avraham Amariliu in "Sefunot," and now available in English translation in David J. Halperin's "Sabbatai Zavi: Testimonies to a Fallen Messiah" [Littman, 2007].)
The following letter follows another drama taking hold of Amirah's court: his abrupt divorcing of Polish Sara, and betrothing (even fucking) of the daughther of the Sofian Rabbi Aharon Majar; his renaming her "Sarah"; the allegations according to some that he bedded her during an orgiastic feast in the presence of other attendees; that he bloodied his mouth by biting her pussy (virginal blood? menstral blood?); that he later drops her for his original Polish Sarah, leaving Majar hanging; that he reinterpreted all the arayot (sexual taboos) from the negative to the positive; etc. etc.
So here he is , after divorcing Polish Sarah in Nisan, and right after his betrothal to Sarah daughter of Majar on 25 Sivan (possibly even sex, for it is called "the completion of the blessed mating" ["gmar hazivug hamevurach"]; Halperin translates "blessed match," which I think is wimpy and more appropriate for "shiduch").
Anyways, this is what Amirah writes, as included in the anonymous letter of a contemporary follower (possibly Nathan of Gaza):
…And on the Full-Moon of Av, Amira"h's light illuminated with such a light as was never before, and on Day 5 of that month he wrote a decree (gezeirah) to make 9 of Av "Festival of Joys" ("Chag haSimchot," also: "Celebrations") [for] 7 days, as you shall see the text of the decree as follows:
I DECREE ON ALL WHO ARE CALLED ISRAEL [i.e. all Jews], THAT ON THE NINTH OF THIS AV THAT APPROACHES IN PEACE, YE SHALL MAKE A GREAT HOLIDAY WITH GREAT JOY, FOLLOWING THE PROGRAM THAT I LAYED OUT IN THE YEAR 5426 [1666; as is known, that year Amirah sent out a general epistle to all of Israel as to how to conduct the upcoming 9 of Av. Amirah named it "Chag haNechamot," "Festival of Consolation"; it was then that he abolished the fast in its most widest influence; the letter even contains original liturgy to say during prayers for that day; there, he signs the letter "Shabatai Tzvi"].
AND NOW I ADD UPON MY DECREE, THAT YOU SHALL MAKE IT LIKE THE LAW OF PASSOVER AS TO [ESTABLISHING IT THAT] THE FIRST DAY BE SABBATICAL AND THE SEVENTH DAY BE SABATICAL, AND THE DAYS IN BETWEEN ARE TO BE LEGALY CONSIDERED AS "THE INTERMEDIATE DAYS" ("CHOL HAMO'ED"), AND CALL IT [WITH] A NEW NAME: "FESTIVAL OF JOYS" ("CHAG HASIMCHOT"). [To note, that in 1666 Amirah writes to observe it "as the day of Purim, literally." Now it is expanded into Passover.]
AND WHOEVER DEFIES MY ORDER (HAMAMREH ET PI) AND WILL NOT MAKE IT [9 OF AV] A HOLIDAY, I SWEAR UPON ME THAT "THE [i.e. his] BLOOD WILL BE DRAINED [or: INTO PIECES HE WILL BE MADE], AND HIS HOUSE BE MADE A DUNGHILL" [Daniel 2:5, what Nebuchadnezar told the Chaldeans when they could not repeat and interpret the dream of the 4-metal man].
THESE ARE THE WORDS (NE'UM) OF THE MOST LOFTY MAN (HAGEVER HUKAM AL), UPON GOD HIS LORD, MESSIAH, LORD OF ISRAEL (ELOHEY ISRAEL), THAT IS, THE ANTECEDENT UPON ALL ANTECEDENTS AND CAUSE OF ALL CAUSES (ILAT AL KOL HA'ILOT V'SIBAT KOL HASIBOT), THAT IS YDVD [i.e. YHVH] THE LORD OF MY FAITH (ELOHEY EMUNOTI) –
ISRAEL (YISRAEL) TZVI
[Then the anonymous letter continues:]
And Amira"h told us, that until now his name was Jacob (Ya'akov), for all his acts were in guile (be'ukvah, play on the name Ya'akov) like Jacob who took the blessings from Esau with gulie. And now he is "Israel," and so he signed in the decree. But in the [letter about the] liturgy for the year 5466 [1666], he signed "Shabtai," for this was his name during the birth [note: not only "from birth," but from the illumoination period called "The Birth" which culminated with the conversion].
And on that day after writing the decree, the wholly sage his honor our master Rabbi Avraham haYachini may the Compassionate One protect him came from Constantinople and he sent messangers throughout Turkey, and he [in Andrianople] he gathered all the city people to the Portugese Congregation [synagogue], and whoever did not want to come he excommunicated him. And he gave the decree over to the hand of the wholly sage his honor our master Rabbi Y. N. [Ya'akov Najara?], and he read it [out loud] from a high position in middle of the crowd. And several of the wealthy people of Constantinople that were here and also some of the city people went to the judge and to the officer of the garden, and Amira"h went there [too]. And he said to the judge and the the aforementioned officer, "If it does not favor your eyes what I do, write to his majesty the king and I will respond to the king.
And we made the Festival of Joys with much joy and many attendees at the house of Amira"h that he he has amongst the Jews [i.e. in the Jewish neighborhood], and also at Congregation Shansulus[?] there was a gathering of many. And during the eve of the Festival of Joys he [Amira"h] visited all the congregations, and whichever congregation that he saw were not praying the holiday prayers, he would disturb them (haya mevalvel otam).
[The letter then goes on to describing the next few days, how when there was some opposition Amirah himself went to announce the decree, and eventually went to visit the king.]
PS: hat-tip to Khepher for the natal chart
