I was going to write a poem while walking on Eastern Parkway but chanced upon a Psalm when I suddenly found myself outside the Rebbe's room.Forget the poem, David's way better…
PSALM 88
1 1 A song; a psalm of the Korahites. For the leader; according to Mahalath. For singing; a maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. 2 LORD, my God, I call out by day; at night I cry aloud in your presence. 3 Let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry. 4 2 For my soul is filled with troubles; my life draws near to Sheol. 5 I am reckoned with those who go down to the pit; I am weak, without strength. 6 My couch is among the dead, with the slain who lie in the grave. Yea for Radha expressing what we all are honestly afraid to say.
The malady that yet carries us all -
this blight on our soul,
always hidden,
always there in the heaven of Jimmy Steward.
All rights are wrong.
All pain is gone as GOD wipes the tear from every eye.
Radha is a sort of a bad Jesus, the man you love to hate.
this is no concession.
I am not patronizing anyone,
but what if the word of the living God were somehow embedded in our Torah?
What fools we’d be for never having suspected,
for having gone down the 9th of Av: the path of destruction,
fully aware of self-deceit,
condemned to everlasting hell for doing the right thing that's wrong,
the bad thing that's good,
the acquiescence to evil that constituted the best decision to who?
to our own best interest.
Sacrificing the world to our own best interest,
on the altar of greed,
on our knees,
standing free of tisha b'AV - our father,
who was destroyed by some filthy Arab of our own creation,
relation,
of whom I ought to be.

From "The Regal Way: The Life and Times of Rabbi Israel of Ruzhin" [aka "Derech haMalchut"] by David Assaf (Stanford U.P. 2002), notes to Ch. 4, p. 361 n. 16 — paraphrasing from "Der Rebbi von Sadagora" by Arnold Hilberg, printed in "Die Gartenlaube," Leipzig 1870, no. 28, p. 473:
"Hilberg […] recounts that when visitng his followers in nearby towns, Rabbi Israel always went to the local bathhouse, and that a heretic approached him there one day and aggresively attacked Hasidism. Shocked by the man's audacity, the zaddik ordered him thrown into the boiling water, which was immediately done. The heretic was then pushed with pitchforks into the furnace until he was cremated. Rabbi Israel, who witnessed the murder, returned to Ruzhin the same day."

i have reb yonasan zatza"l's signature blue raincoat and am reluctant to just throw it out. is there a museum in the offing with a rotunda where it cold lie in state? i could cut it up and send a piece of it to every yeshiva, college or coffee shop that didn't recognize his greatness like pilegesh b'givah but unless you follow that up with a massacre it's a bit toothless. maybe we could organize a raid on the hungarian pastry shop and pelt everybody with napoleons and eclairs and force a scalding shot of decaf espresso down nathan englander's throat. then we could make michiko kakatani wash dishes until she dropped her ivy league accent (how do those Nips copy that so fast?). i do know i can't throw it out. one person said "al pi halocho" it belongs to Irv and i say "al pi halocho" can suck my dick. he loved 870 and he loved my cozy cave and just because "Irv Demjanjuk" looks old and harmless now doesn't make him less of a monster. i just bring this up because there are evil forces pressuring me to clean up my apt. so the neighbors and police shouldn't think ill of me when they break in after detecting the stench of my rotting corpse from under the door.
